Efficient and Nutritious Feed
MLF utilizes state of the art feed technology and the finest raw materials to maximize the growth cycle and quality of the hog. Hogs are fed up to 16 different formulas throughout their life cycle, helping Maple Leaf to deliver ideal specifications for the Japan market. Diets are based on genetics, as well as the age and weight of the hogs. Feed is delivered to each batch to ensure uniform growth and pork quality.
Feed is an important variable in pork quality. Fat composition is primarily affected by feed and influences directly meat firmness and colour. Maple Leaf Foods predominantly uses hard grains in the feed rations. Barley is a preferred ingredient in the feed composition at Maple Leaf due to its highly digestible nature. Wheat from Western Canada is equally high quality and provides hogs with advantages such as high gluten. Energy and protein is generated from soy meal and grain corn.
Maple Leaf sources ingredients from vendors that go through a rigorous approval process. The relationship with feed supply companies is critical to our operations. It is important to exchange knowledge about leading edge technologies about nutrition and feeding systems.
Maple Leaf has a robust technical services team with diversity in expertise across Animal Welfare, Quality Assurance, Nutrition and Sustainability. This dedicated group of people ensures that Maple Leaf leads the global industry in continuous improvement of pork production.
